Oregon Outback '25 -

Are you ready for an epic, rugged bikepacking adventure?
We’re organizing a SAG-supported Oregon Outback ride for 2025 and inviting adventurous riders to fill the remaining spots in our group.
Trip Overview
This ride covers the full Oregon Outback route from Klamath Falls to The Dalles, with travel beginning on May 29 and ending June 7 or 8, depending on return arrangements. A SAG vehicle will assist with gear transport at the start and finish and will meet us in camp each night, but riders should be prepared for a bikepacking-style experience with limited outside support.
This plan also allows us to ride the full OC&E Trail from Klamath Falls to Silver Lake, a section that was bypassed on a previous ride due to fire damage.
We are capping the group at 10 riders, and several spots remain available. If you’re interested, now is the time to sign up!
What to Expect
-
This is a rugged and remote route with three dry camps that have no water access.
-
The SAG vehicle will provide water and limited gear transport.
-
The ride includes a mix of dispersed camping, established campgrounds, and motel stays, with options for lodging in Prineville and Shaniko.
-
While the SAG vehicle will be available, all riders must be self-sufficient and prepared for overnighting on their own & without the SAG, if a rain storm makes roads impassible.
Planned Overnight Stops
-
The Switchbacks Trailhead – Dry camp, pit toilets, SAG vehicle access for water, portable shower
-
Horse Glade Trailhead – Dry camp, pit toilets, SAG vehicle access for water, portable shower
-
Silver Lake – Dinner at the Cowboy Dinner Tree (reservations required). Stay at the Silver Lake RV Park
-
Sand Springs – Dry dispersed camp, portable toilet & shower
-
Big Bend or Prineville Reservoir State Park (TBD)
-
Prineville – Short day, motel options available, layover opportunity for resupply and laundry
-
Ashwood – Lawn camping, water and toilets available, no other services
-
Shaniko – Motel option available at the recently reopened Shaniko Hotel
-
Deschutes River State Park – State Park campground, final night before return travel
SAG Support and Shared Expenses
-
The group will share costs for the SAG vehicle, gas, and possibly lodging for a dedicated driver.
-
Each rider is responsible for their own motel lodging and meals, though group meals are under discussion.
-
If we do not have a dedicated SAG driver, we will rotate driving duties to maximize ride time.
-
Transportation options to Klamath Falls and back from The Dalles are still being finalized.
-
Riders on the OC&E section are encouraged to support Dirty Freehub’s trail maintenance program—the sole source of funding for this valuable resource, as Oregon State Parks does not currently provide financial support.
